Falcon Lake Fishing Report-October 2009

October 1st

Hello everyone, we had a good month in September with a lot of quality fish up to 9 pounds with an 11 pound “hawg”, the biggest of the month. The water level is @288.55 and the water temp is @ 81deg. With October here and the ducks coming in you get that feeling of the up coming Fall season. Football jigs are starting to produce some big fish,  5/8 to 1oz in the craw pattern are doing good. Fish the lighter one in around brush and the 1oz in deep rocky bottom. 10 " worms and brush hogs with some spinner baits action is just starting to improve, it will get real good around mid October and into the winter months. Magnum flukes in watermelon magic and watermelon red are working fished around tree tops in 12 to 18 ft of water. If you want to fish Falcon you need to bring extra heavy rods with a lot of back bone like the Power Tackle GM5-7'3" or GMP5-7'3" with the palm grip to flip those jigs and heavy weights in the thickest brush. Here at Falcon you can use a 7' 0" heavy and still do good. You have to keep pressure on these fish at all times to get them to come out of the brush. We had 2 broken rods this last three days, (not Power Tackle rods) because the rods did not have the back bone and yes they broke on fish. You don't need a lot of rods to fish here just a few that can turn the fish’s head in the hook set and get them coming your way. Commorants are becoming a problem with the thousands of birds multiplying every year and staying here all year round and eating shad, bass, and any fish that they ambush when they hunt. There are armies of 2,000 to 4,000 birds coming in creeks and wiping out every thing in their path, Falcon Lake is not the only lake with this problem we need open season on these birds to thin them out a little.
