Power Tackle - Lake Amistad Fishing Report
Lake Amistad Fishing Report-December 2008

The lake is still a little over full which has has made the fall fishing here different but good.
I hope the lake will stay full through the spring with all the shallow cover it will be a sight fisherman's dream.
Those giant bass won't have to spawn out in 25ft it will be just like the spawn of '05 with all the flooded huisache we caught several over 10 and even  a few share-a-lunkers shallow.
Something to look forward to in '09.
Late fall and early winter should be great here on Amistad because of the acres of flooded hydrilla from 15 to 40 ft and  with the water temps slowly creeping down to the mid 50's. You will want to have these baits tied on: Crankbaits, swimbaits, 1 1/2 oz spinnerbait,  swimbaits again, and suspending jerkbaits. This is the tackle I will use to tick the top of the grass with and maybe tick off a bass.
*If you find a good creek channel lined with grass down the center of it that is standing tall you'd better flip a 1 1/2 oz beaver or a jig through it.
I fished ledges today from 40 to 50 on top falling into the river 125 plus ft with football jigs and carolina rigs. For some old school Amistad fishing (pre-hydrilla and gps) Thats how we fished from Nov to March. String out marker bouys right on the break down a ledge or out-line a point.  We used to catch bass regularly in 70 and 80 ft, man were they ugly, pail yellow with their eyes bugged out.
We caught several today most were in 50 ft right on the ledge.  Some were suspended down off the ledge sitting on out croppings hitting the bait as it is free falling 10 ft or so after the bait has drug off the edge.
Just another tool for your tool box when fishing winter cold water months here on Amistad.

Thanks,
Ray Hanselman
