Lake Amistad Fishing Report-December 2009 |
December patterns on Amistad will not change much from November, as most fish will still be relating to shad. This is a great time of year to work on reading your electronics. Most bass will be relating to either the ends of long main lake points or areas where a channel intersects a point or ridge and creates an underwater ledge. The depth you can catch bass may surprise you. Many fish will be on the bottom in 30'-60' with some schools being as deep as 75'. There is a ton of productive water on Amistad this time of year so graphing for the best school on a spot will save you lots of time. Look for fish that are on top of the ledge and are near to bait (either perch or shad). Once fish are located a drop shot or jigging spoon will produce and will be easier to fish in deep water with a vertical presentation. I will usually hold my bait out of the water and only drop it when a fish appears on the graph. This will present your bait to both suspended bass and one that are on the bottom. A sensitive rod really helps to feel light winter time bites I prefer the Power Tackle SPNC-43 7'0" rod. Best baits have been watermelon or green pumpkin flukes on the drop shot and chrome or chartreuse spoons. There will also be a lot of fish that can be caught shallow in December. A suspending jerk bait is a great way to find and catch these fish. Key on flats that have deep water access and hydrilla that comes within 10' of the surface. Good areas are Caballo, Zorro, Evans and San Pedro creeks. Good Fishing Keith Combs trophybassguide.com
