Lake Amistad Fishing Report - February 2008
Written by Keith Combs - Pro Staff

February on Amistad will be an exciting time. The spawn is near and the fish will be on the move. Currently the water temp is holding in the low to mid 50’s and most fish are still set in their winter patterns and relating to deep humps and the points of main lake ridges in the 25-50’ zone. These fish can be caught in a variety of different ways; try Carolina rigged creature baits and 3/4 to 1 oz football jigs in watermelon red or green pumpkin. 1/2 - 1oz Jigging spoons also come into play this time of year especially when you graph fish and bait in the same area.
Warming trends this month that push the water temp. into the high 50’s will provide for some great opportunities to catch some of Amistad’s largest fish a little bit shallower. Look for the healthiest grass (which will normally be found in the backs of major creeks) and slow roll a 1-1/4 oz. spinner bait or crank a DD-22 in the 12-15’ zone. A suspending jerk bait or Texas rigged senko will also account for plenty of February bass.
Power tackle has introduced two new cranking rods that I have been very impressed with. The PGC-170 and the PTC-70 have added a whole new element to cranking although both rods offer the forgiveness of fiberglass. I can feel everything my crank bait is doing and detect subtle bites I would not have felt in the past. This sensitivity is made possible by using only top grade fiberglass blanks with extremely thin wall thickness. Not to mention the rods weigh in just under 5oz.

If you would like to book a trip or if I can assist you in any way please give me a call at 254-681-9566 or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Until next time, good fishing.
