The fish on Amistad are finally starting to get in their winter pattern, which will make it a lot easier to stay on fish from one day to the next. Although there will always be some catchable fish shallow, the larger concentrations of fish will be found in the 25'-50' range. These fish will often suspend off of sharp breaks and can be located easily on your electronics. Some of the best ways to catch them will be with either a 3/4 to 1oz. football jig or Carolina rigged lizard or creature bait. If these two methods fail, a Texas rigged senko or finesse worm with a 3/16 oz weight will often do the trick. Best colors are green pumpkin or watermelon red.
I have been using a new rod for deep structure fishing called a PG104 made by Power Tackle . This is a 7'6" rod and has a medium-fast, medium-heavy action which allows for extra casting distance and the slightly softer action makes it easier to feel soft bites before the fish feels you. The rod is extremely light and sports titanium recoil guides which make it even more sensitive. If you get a chance check out the Power Tackle website for the entire list of rods and be sure to check out the lake reports section for some great information on both Choke Canyon and Amistad lakes.
The next month on Amistad will most likely produce some of the largest fish of the year.
