Lake Amistad Fishing Report-January 2010 |
|
January Lake Amistad January fishing on Amistad will be much like December. The main difference is the fish will be one month closer to the spawn which opens up a couple of windows depending mostly on the weather. The one thing that I look for regardless of what pattern in fishing this time of year is deep water access. The depth is relative to the area of lake you are fishing, but there generally needs to be some kind of a drop, usually in the form of a creek channel. There will be alot of extremely deep fish this month in the 35'-60' range. My best baits are a drop shot, 1oz. jigging spoon, and a 3/4 oz. football jig. Green Pumpkin red is a good color on the jig and drop-shot, chrome/white or chartreause on the spoon. Look for areas where a creek channel bends in next to a main lake point or ridge and creates an almost vertical drop. Then use your electronics to look for fish that are close to the drop. These fish will be easy to catch and will usually be in a school of 5-10 fish. I have found that the less action on the drop shot the better. Just keep the sinker in contact with the bottom and let the bait glide through the water. I use a Power Tackle SPN43 7'0" spinning rod for this technique and spool up with 8-10lb. flourocarbon line. Another productive pattern this month will revolve around hydrilla. Finding the healthiest green grass is very important. Look for grass that is closest to the main channels in any of the major creeks, Caballo and Zorro have been real good lately. My best baits have been a Norman deep little N and a suspending jerk bait both in shad patterns 12'-15' is a good depth range to start at. This pattern is usually best after several days of warmer weather. Good Fishing Keith Combs www.Trophybassguide.com
