Lake Amistad Fishing Report-July 2010

July 2010 report
STILL NO PIRATES!

Lake Amistad is still producing, the fish have spread out a little though. I have been splitting my days by fishing shallow and deep patterns. 50 to 70 fish days are still happening with best 5 weighing 24 to 27lbs.

The lake is about 3 to 4 ft low and the water temp is creeping into the low 80's, The shallow grass of all types is doing great, the deeper hydrilla out past 25ft has not grown as good as I predicted but there is a really good edge in alot of areas out to 23ft.

I have been fishing a spro frog and a rage shad shallow on top of the pepper grass/duck weed and hair grass, this works all day. I try to find an inside edge to cast to or follow. The deeper outside edge a hollow body swim bait or a skinny dipper on a weighted hook fished through the grass will work. Don't forget a light 3/16th oz Tx rig around the edge, some of it can grow out to 13ft!

Fishing the outside edge of hydrilla mixed in with some bushes is the other pattern I mentioned. Light Tx rigs and drop shots as well as deep cranks and if the edge is tall enough you better flip it.  The outside edge varies depending on the area you fish but an average lake depth would be 23ft. There are areas where the hydrilla has scruff out to 29ft.

Thanks,
Ray Hanselman

UPDATE TO THIS REPORT...Since report was written...Hurrican ALex has dumped tremendous amounts of rain into the lake and feeding rivers...thus the lake level is now above pool and rising.
