Lake Amistad Fishing Report - June 2008
Written by Keith Combs - Pro Staff

May fishing on Amistad was unbelievable, I expect no different for June with many of the same patterns carrying over. The current lake level is 1099 (18’ low and dropping). The rapid drop in lake level over the past month has left the grass a lot shallower than normal on Amistad,  this has concentrated the bass in smaller areas making them easier to catch.

Many of the larger fish this month will remain shallow and relate to bream beds which can be found in the backs of the major creek arms San Pedro, Evans, Zorro, Tule and Caballo creeks have some of the best grass currently, and the bream will be bedding along the inside edge of the grass in 1’-6’ of water. An exciting way to catch these fish is to throw a perch colored top water, walking bait such as a Vixen or Sammy or a prop bait like a Devil Horse work best. This pattern will work well both early and late, but should not be overlooked in the heat of the day especially when bream or present. I usually throw my top waters on a Power Tackle PG-143 6’10” rod, but on days when you are having trouble missing fish from short strikes switch to a PGC-170 fiberglass cranking rod, the soft tip will allow the fish to take the bait much better.

There will also be many June bass relating to points in 12’-20’ of water especially the points created by a swing of a creek channel leading out of spawning areas. Try fishing these places with a Texas rigged Senko, Power worm or a Carolina rigged creature bait in green pumpkin or watermelon red.

Schooling action will also heat up this month around long main lake points and ledges. These fish can be caught on just about any shad imitating bait. Clear Sammys or spooks are always a good choice as well as small swim-baits and flukes. To book a trip or if I can help you in any way on your next trip to Amistad give me a call at 1-254-681-9566.

Good Fishing
