Power Tackle - Lake Amistad Fishing Report
Lake Amistad Fishing Report - May 2008

The lake is on the yearly irrigation water decline. They have let out more water this year due to the lack of rainfall in the valley. It should slow down soon. The falling water has caused the bass to eat and eat often. The past week and a half has been so easy to catch from 70 to over 100 bass a day. Fishing from the bank out to 20 ft using what ever is tied on!

The lake is about 14 ft low and the water temp is in the low 70’s which is operating temperature for a bass.

They have started their post spawn feeding frenzy with large schools of bass everywhere. The blue gills have shown up shallow and the craw dads are crawling looking for new rocks to hide under. All this has the bass getting back in shape.
I have been using an assortment of baits from a Reaction Innovations Vixen on a Power Tackle PG144 with 65# braid. I have also been using a 1/8th oz weighted hook rigged with a watermelon candy fluke on a Power Tackle FB 4 with 16 # Gamma flouro. The go to bait though, has been a 3/16th oz Tru-tungsten Tx rigged 5” senko on a Power Tackle PG 104 7’6” with 16 or 20# Gamma Flouro. I have also been catching some on medium cranks with a PTC 7’0 and swim baits on the new 8’0 PT Ultimate Swim Bait rod.

Look for main lake and secondary flats, and points that have a good bit of brush and grass on them. Some of these points will have giant schools of blue gill you will see them nipping the surface. If you find that you won’t have to leave for a while! No joke you can catch them from the bank out to 20 ft.

I look for the top water bite to get better as the month goes on.

Great Fishin'
