Power Tackle - Lake Amistad Fishing Report
Lake Amistad Fishing Report-November 2008

Well as you all know the lake has fill up to conservation level which it hasn't since 1993.
It has covered a lot of desert vegetation and put new nutrients back in the water.
Everything about the lake being full is great other than it being a wide open ROUGH son of a b...
with just a slight breeze.
The water temps have been in the high 60's to low 70's and again the lake is full.
The hydrilla is in great shape with the best grass from the inside edge or where the bank used to be now is 16 ft on out to 30 ft.
As usual it is Amistad with several ways to catch them.
I have been sticking with one pattern the last few trips though. It has been very productive for catching the right sized ones.
Just get on the inside edge of the hydrilla and follow it looking for changes like corners drains or points. It is the same way you would fish an outside edge.
I had a day recently where we caught 5 that weighed over 30 lbs and the second best would have weighed over 25... It was incredible. I haven't duplicated that day but 25 lbs isn't a problem.
I have been fishing it with Tx rigged 3/16th oz 7" senkos and 7" flukes anything green pumpkin Fishing this rig with a POWER TACKLE PG 104 and 20LB Gamma Flouro.
Also flippin' the inside grass line with a Tx rigged 1 1/2 oz Tru-Tungsten weight with a bloody mary sweet beaver on 65lb braid. Fishing this rig with a POWER TACKLE GM5 7'3" rod.

There are still plenty of fish shallow but the quality isn't there, you can catch fish steady up to 4lbs and occasionally bigger but for the most part it is just fun fish.
The fish shallow are caught on lightly weighted or no weight flukes and senkos or methiolate trick worms. A small jerk bait or a 1/2 blade will catch a few as well.
I don't usually stop for schoolies but there has been some nice fish with them. So don't pass them up for some quick action.

I was down at the coast for a few days trying out a few of POWER TACKLE'S NEW SALT WATER RODS.   There were a couple full time salt water fishermen with me and they were very impressed to say the least in fact they are new owners of a couple rods.
We caught 37 bull reds over 20 lbs several keeper reds and trout also giant jack fish.  We really put the rods to the test.   The SPN41 7'10" spinning rod is great for long casts with top water or reaching that school of reds you just think are out of range.  The PG142 7'0" is the perfect speck rod with the right balance for bait action, and finesse for fighting a soft mouth trout.  We also used the POWER TACKLE SBP5 8'0" rod for the over sized fish it really could handle them, so you could get the fish to the boat before they were completely exhausted and could be returned to the gulf.

Thanks,
Ray Hanselman
