Lake Amistad Fishing Report-September 2009 |

Lake Amistad Fishing Report September 2009 The lake is about three feet low water temp is hovering around 80 degrees, the pepper grass all over the lake and the hydrilla is cycling or starting over. The deep grass disappeared but the shallow hydrilla has grown good from 12 ft out to 20 ft and I have started to see some new growth out to 28. It might be a little late for the deep grass to get tall enough to flip before winter but it will have fish in it for other methods. There are a few special little spots where it didn't completely disappear deep, but for the most part the flippin' grass is 18 to 22 ft. I have been catching some really nice fish on Spro frogs in the duck weed/pepper grass. Try to find it where there is NOT any hydrilla mixed in with it. They seem to like it where it is completely open underneath. Also try fishing a light Tx rig around the edges of the pepper especially around the points and isolated patches. A hollow body swim bait or a medium crank is great around the same area. We fished today and tried a river ledge 50 ft on top dropping into 140 ft and caught some good fish suspended off the ledge free spooling a drop shot. They probably were in 60 ft or so. I wish they would get off that main lake... This is not a good pattern for tournament fishing because it is really hard on the fish from that depth, they get optical poptitude if you know what I mean. Fishing for the most part has improved the past couple weeks and should continue into this month with cooler temps and shorter days. We are seeing alot more 3 lb to 4 lb fish caught and even a few over 7 in places where most people fish and not out on some secret river channel ledge or hump in the middle of the lake. I even had a great day in San Pedro last week... If you like chasing schoolies the mouth of 454, mouth of the Devils, Evans creek, and around the 277 bridge these area have had giant schools of bass that stay up all day, some days there are even some decent 3 lb fish busting shad, mostly though they are 12 to 15 inches long. It is great for kids and beginners or even people who fish every day. Thanks, Ray Hanselman 830-317-9942
