March on Amistad means the spawn is here and this year there will be lots of double digit fish caught. One of the most important tools this time of the year will be your temperature gauge. The best shallow bite will revolve around the warmest water, which will be in the backs of all the major creeks in Texas and Mexico. The Mexico creeks tend to warm a little sooner. When the water in the back of the creeks warms into the mid 60's spawning fish will raid the shallows. These fish can be caught a variety of ways casting Texas rigged brush hogs or lizards to isolated shallow cover is a sure bet. Jerk baits and floating worms will also work well. Sight fishing is also a great way to catch the fish of a life time, on Amistad bedding bass are very particular, so changing baits often is required. One of the hottest bed fishing baits is a new bait I have been using over the past couple months called a lateral perch made by Power Tackle. This bait imitates a bedding bass worst enemy perfectly. The Lateral Perch will be on the market shortly.
There will also be a good deep water bite this month. There will still be lots of big fish on the main lake in 28-40 relating to channel bends and long tapering point. These fish can be caught a variety of ways, 1oz. football jigs and Carolina rigs are very good. The key is to keep in contact with the bottom and fish slowly. Best colors are watermelon and greeen pumpkin. Another deep water pattern in March is fishing the center of drains leading to spawning areas. Key on drains that have lots of trees in 12' - 25' if hydrilla is present thats even better. Texas rigged senkos and suspending jerkbaits will work well on these fish.
