Sam Rayburn Fishing Report-February 2010

It’s time to put your foot on the trolling motor and pick up your PG104-7'6" and Power Tackle's new stick PTC73-CP and put on a lipless bait and go to work. I have been using the new PTC73-CP and you can feel every piece of grass your bait gets near! Feeling your lipless bait as you crank it over and around the grass is the biggest key to catching bass in cold weather. I like using the PTC73-CP on the ½ and ¼ oz, but I still love the feel with the PG104-7'6" with the ¾ or 1oz baits. Most of the lake is off color, but close to the grass the water is clearer. I like to start off using 3/4 or 77 Sebile Flat Shad in red or gold color; these two colors really work good early in the morning. Later in the day as the sun comes up I will go to a white, shad or perch color, I have better luck with these colors later in the day. This year on Rayburn we have grass all over the lake, so its just best to go to your favorite cove and start fishing. For the ones that don’t have your favorite cove, Buck Bay area, Veach, Caney Creek area are all great area to start it. The trap fish are not the only fish you can catch, there are still lot’s of fish out deeper on the edge of the grass. Best to use your PG144-7'0" with a TX rigged baby brush hog or lizard, you can also use your PG104.5-7'6" with Carolina Rig with those same baits. There will be another group of fish out deeper on main lake ridges in 14 to 20 feet, that’s when you get your PTC70-7'0" with your DD 22 and start working the bait off the edge of the ridges. I also like throwing the Hot Lips cranks bait in the same area but it really works better on the other New Power Tackle stick PTC73-7'3", it is the same stick just 3" longer.  Later in the month there will be fish starting to move up towards the bushes looking for a place to spawn. Best baits are Wacky-Worm, Senko and TX rigged lizard. I like using all of these baits on PG144-7'0".
Good Luck fishing Sam Rayburn this month, keep a close eye on those big cold fronts, BIG SAM is real ugly when a cold front hits.
