Power Tackle - Lake Sam Rayburn Fishing Report
Lake Sam Rayburn Fishing Report-May 2009

Sam Rayburn lake level is 163.00That puts the lake one foot low. The water temp is running in the mid 70’s and by the end of the month it will be right at 80. May is one of the best months on Big Sam to catch good numbers of fish and have a good chance of some fish over 10 pounds. With the lake back up to almost full it has hay grass and pepper grass flooded along the edge of the bank all around the lake. This is a great time to take your PG-104-7’6” with your Stanley Ribbit frog in your favorite color and start working it over the top of the flooded pepper grass.  I also like to work a Spro Frog in these same areas.  Fishing the pepper grass areas,  I use a Pflueger Summit with 40 LB braided line. With your PG-104-7’6” and your Summit 7.1 reel this will help you get those big bass out of that thick pepper grass. One good thing to remember is to not jerk the frog away from the fish, when they blow up on the frog wait until you feel the fish before you set the hook. This is not just an early morning way to catch fish,  these fish will stay in the pepper grass all day long. Another good way to catch fish is to stay out on the edge of the pepper grass in 4 to 6 feet and use your PG-144-7’0” with your TX rig, also your PG-143-6’6” with your Falcon K-Wacky hook and wacky-worm.  Best color worm for  May is redbug and june-bug.  You will be able to catch fish on jigs and craw worms on the edge of the hydrilla grass and in the grass in 7 to 10 feet of water. With the lake coming up this past month Rayburn is finally going to have some grass for us to flip in. Best to use your PG-104.5-7’6” with 50 to 65 lb. braided line. Best to use a ¾ or 1 oz. jig, this weight will get your jig under the grass where the big ones live. When fishing a craw worm a ½ or ¾ oz. weight pegged on top of your craw worm works the best. There will also be some fish on the main lake ridges and main lake points looking for shad, this is when you use your PGC70 7’0” with Pflueger Trion reel rigged with 12 lb line. Get those Norman DD-22s out in a shad color and go to fishing,  most of these fish will be from 10 to 18 feet of water.  Hope you have a great time fishing Big Sam this month.
