Lake Stillhouse Fishing Report-October 2008 |
|
I have been on the lake quite a bit recently and the fish have been moving shallower following the bait. Large schools of 2-4 lbs can be found around the island holding in grass from 5-12 ft. I have been catching these fish on a spinnerbait and red crankbait (DD14) early and late. I am throwing the spinnerbait on a PG143 6'10" model. I have been throwing the crankbait on a PGC170. Try to get both baits in the grass and rip it free, triggering a reaction strike. After the spinnerbait and crankbait bite slows, try fishing a weighted fluke on a PG104 in the grass with a deadstick retrieve. This has accounted for some of the larger fish later in the morning. Keep a topwater rod rigged with a River-2-Sea Rover topwater bait because these same fish will begin to school on the surface throughout the day. The frog bite has also been stellar the last couple of weeks, look for shallow rocky banks in about a foot of water, usually found in the creeks. I have been throwing a Stanley Bull Ribbit on a PG104.5 with 65 lb Power Pro braided line. For the most part, the bigger fish 7-10 lbs have still been coming from the deeper drops 18-24 ft, and are really keying on the shad moving in and out of the main river channel. These fish can be caught on a variety of baits including football head jigs, carolina rig, flutter spoons, and a 1 oz roadrunner. The big roadrunner is a newer technique I have been using on this lake that is proving to be really effective on those deeper fish by giving them a different look than everyone else. I set the boat in about 35 feet of water and throw towards river channel ledges and bends, slowly swimming it back to the boat with a PG104 and 20 lb flourocarbon. Thanks, Adrian Barnes
